Wow!! What a great tour.
First, thank you to our past and present participants, communities, local clubs and volunteers for making this, our 9th consecutive, tour a reality. You all brought us here, and because of your committment to this organization we're going to celebrate our 10th year together with a tour/rendezvous representative of that milestone and our committment to the sport of bicycle touring.
I remember telling one of our riders last week that "during the tour I feel like someone took a syringe and injected me with a whole bunch of new friends" and all I have to do is learn their names, talk to them, make them smile, and keep them safe and happy about riding a bicycle in North Dakota, in August, on blistering host asphalt, for a week long stress test they could just get at the local hospital. Hmmm! ;^)
It's chaos. It's frustrating. It's uncomfortable at times. It's really cold at night, in a tent. There are lots of mosquitos. Some towns (villages) have almost nothing that reflects the normal realities of daily life that many of our participants are accustomed to. But it's a repeating rendezvous that mimics what our ancestors have always done, and out of these many rendezvous' grew established centers of commerce, cultural traditions, comradery and love across racial and tribal boundaries and above all, a peaceful struggle and fellowship among people. These places can be found dotted all around North Dakota. I aim to find as many of them as I can and lure this salty bunch of hardy new and old friends to rendezvous again that first full week of August.
